The Peten & The Maya Sites
The largest and most northerly part of Guatemala is the Department of the Peten.
(Departments in Guatemala are roughly equivalent to states and provinces in North
America) The Peten is a flat and tropical land form that is really an extension of the
Yucatan peninsula. For those interested in Guatemala’s classical Maya heritage,
The Peten is a must-see region of the country.
Not only is the huge, fascinating and mysterious city of Tikal in the Peten, but also many many other important sites such as El Ceibal, Aguateca. Dos Pilas and many more.
Eco Tourist Lodges
The jungle of the Peten, once considered a major lung of the world, has virtually disappeared. The remnants are now pretty well confined to national parks and nature preserves. In these preserves are many eco tourist lodges offering travellers an opportunity to experience the wilderness in as realistic a manner as possible. Eco tourism is a growing segment in Guatemala’s overall tourist industry and it could well provide the means of guaranteeing the security of its remaining but threatened natural jungle.
Copan
This magnificent city located just across the border in Honduras, is one of the most famous. The country, however, is full of smaller centres all of which attest to remarkable homogeneity of classic and pre-classsic Maya culture. All of them reward time spent exploring them.
Abaj Takalik

The old and fascinating city of Abaj Takalik on the Pacific slope.

Quirigua
Quirigua, with its magnificent stellae is one of the most beautiful ruins in the country.

These sites, as well as the more remote sites such as Dos Pilas can all be visited on one of our private tours. We can also arrange helicopter tours to the very remote site of El Mirador.
